Komodos

Komodos are reptiles. They are classified in Varanidae (monitoring lizard) family. Komodos are the biggest lizard in the world. They grow until their big size because of island gigantism, the effect of the condition that there is not any carnivore in the island they live. They don’t have hearing sense, but they have very strong sense to detect, taste and smell using their tongue, just like the other reptiles. They have poor sight in night and cannot see the differences of moving and unmoving objects.
Komodos can run up to 20 kilometers per hour for short track. They are good swimmers too. They can dive until 4.5 meters. They also can climb trees using their powerful claws. They use their claws and their saliva to hunt. Their saliva is very dangerous because their saliva is deathly.
Komodos reproduce with eggs. The females usually lay her eggs in nest that is not used. The eggs have incubation period for 7-8 months. After hatch, the young Komodos will spend their much life on the trees, where they are safe from the adult Komodos that cannibals.
Most of Komodos live in Komodo Island, which is located in East Nusa Tenggara. They spread to other islands around Komodo Island like Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang and Gili Dasami. There are only thousands of Komodos that exist now, and it is still decreasing. So, there are many zoos and organizations that make captivity for Komodos. Those captivity are very good for tourism, especially Komodo Island which has been elected to be one of 7 Wonders of the World, because of those unique Komodos.
